If you think back to some of your most memorable times in life, you will realize that there was an emotion tied to that experience or moment. The same can unfortunately also be true for terrible things that have happened to you.
Research shows that you remember something more vividly and can call upon that event quite easily because an emotion was tied to it. This also pertains to your golf shots. You want to have a “bank” of great shots and putts in your mind. But to have a “bank” of great shots in your mind, you must make deposits of those great shots. That means that for every great shot you hit, give yourself a fist pump or other emotionally charged action. You can also simply admire how superb the shot you just hit really was. Additionally, you can write down in a journal each night the best shot(s) you hit that particular day, whether it was on the course or at the practice facility.
The other side of the coin is that when you hit poor shots or get bad breaks, it can be true that getting upset, frustrated or disgusted engrains the memory of that shot into your mind – exactly what you don’t want to do! You’ve got to train the way you think and perceive yourself and your golf shots. Train yourself to enjoy and get excited about the great ones and quickly purge the ones that didn’t turn out so well. Do yourself a favor the next time you watch a tour event. Just about every tour pro easily puts their bad shots behind them AND THAT STARTS WITH NOT GIVING THOSE SHOTS ANY ATTENTION EMOTIONALLY.
