Golf Tips from Trent – Write a Script for the Event

Write a Script For the Event

Every golfer has demons at times. Some have them on almost every shot and others much less frequently. Those who have them less frequently have trained themselves to think differently. They weren’t just born with the ability to, say, get over bad shots better than the next person. They looked in the mirror one night and said, “That’s it! Next time I hit a bad shot, I’m going to …” At that moment, they took a vital step to improve – they wrote a script for the event. If you don’t know the definition of the word Volition, go look it up as it will do you good on the golf course.
I highly recommend you look at a couple situations in your round that cause you trouble. Some common examples are teeing off on the first hole, playing in a tournament, playing with your boss, or what to do after a bad shot or hole. Instead of just wishing you’d get better, you’ve got to have a new plan. For the first tee example, what works quite well for many golfers is to think about that shot for a week leading up to it. Come to the realization that other people are not wishing bad things happen to you (they’re freaking out about their own turn), see the starter there, sense the people watching you, create a picture in your mind of how it will feel to be completely focused on your target, visualize a great shot, and of course imagine that the great shot happened. Do this every day for a week leading up to it.
Regarding bad shots, you have to realize that it’s inevitable that you’re going to hit them. It’s part of the game. Because golf is about how well you miss it, sure it’s important to have good technique and mental toughness skills but choosing safer targets is one way to take the pressure off and allow a miss to still turn out well. The person who aims for targets with very small margins of error will soon see some big numbers on his scorecard. One process to employ after you hit a bad shot is this. Step #1: take a practice swing that felt like a good motion then put the club back into your bag. Step #2: walk with your chin down into your chest for 10 steps and count each step. On the 10th step, stomp a little firmer into the ground THEN pick your chin off your chest and move on. It’s a great way to slam the door on the previous shot and also by picking up your chin from your chest it signifies, in you, a very crucial trigger to move on and focus on what lies ahead of you.
Take a look at a couple of common circumstances that cause you trouble and plan for something different. “Grab the bull by the horns” as the saying goes. You’ve got to start with doing it once and begin to work it into a new, productive habit. You’ll enjoy the game so much more … and shoot lower scores. Enjoy all of the obstacles and brick walls as they’re there to make you stronger, Trent Wearner, PGA www.TrentWearnerGolf.com
